“A primer on everything the wine-phobic woman needs to know . . . Probably the only wine book out there that could be excerpted in Cosmo.” —Chicago Reader

Alpana Singh is uniquely qualified to talk about wine, contemporary women and relationships. At age twenty-six, she became the youngest woman to be inducted into the world’s most exclusive sommelier organization, the Court of Master Sommeliers. She spent five years as sommelier at a world-famous four-star restaurant, Everest of Chicago. While there she closely observed the sometimes humorous, sometimes absurd, social interactions between men and woman at all stages of their relationships. Her mental journal of these “social observations” came in handy as she wrote Alpana Pours.

Alpana Pours reaches readers in playful language they will understand, and in a highly entertaining manner they will enjoy. Women want to know how to select wine when entertaining important clients, pair wine with food they and their partner are preparing together, choose the right wines for hostess gifts, bridal showers, a first meeting with a boyfriend’s parents and what wine to, or not to, order on a first date. Alpana Pours supplies tips on these and a myriad of other topics including “dating” and “dealing with guys.” The book’s gender riff on wine and lifestyle is unique and will definitely grab reader’s attention.

“Singh’s quirky writing makes reading about the correct wine and food pairing more fun than it should be . . . Singh blends wine culture with everyday life, while still illuminating the mysteries and myths of wine. The author’s friendly tone welcomes readers who don’t know their pinot noir from their peanut butter.” —Publishers Weekly

As the youngest woman to be a member of the exclusive Court of Master Sommeliers, Singh brings her extensive knowledge of wine to a new generation of wine drinking women. Singh's quirky writing makes reading about the correct wine and food pairing more fun than it should be, with titles like, "Wine Tasting Your Way to Mr. Right," "Shoes You Never Wear and Wine You Never Drink," and "White Flight," about men's avoidance of white wines. "From the Alpana Files," periodically interrupts the shop talk and traces Singh's personal history of her love of wine, including how she broke her career decision to her very surprised mother (she expected Singh to pursue medicine). The book features a detailed list of exemplary wine regions, suggestions for entertaining with wine and a very useful guide to finding good cheap wines. One of the more invaluable tools Singh includes is a key deciphering restaurant wine lists. Singh blends wine culture with everyday life, while still illuminating the mysteries and myths of wine. The author's friendly tone welcomes readers who don't know their pinot noir from their peanut butter.

Choosing wines and pairing wine with food and regional varietals have been covered by other noted wine connoisseurs, and this work doesn't cover new territory in that respect. Singh, a 29-year-old master sommelier and host of a PBS restaurant show, attempts to demystify the process of wine selection from a female perspective, drawing parallels to dating and relationships as well as to proclamations about male and female differences in wine preferences. She wants to shatter the myth that wine selection belongs in the male domain, yet she seems to stereotype women. Basing her youthful observations on her experiences as the director of wine and spirits in a Chicago restaurant, she declares that women like white and men prefer red. Men choose full-bodied, hearty wines, while women want light and fruity. It may be that her observations have some merit, and perhaps some women will recognize themselves in this book, particularly thirtysomething wine novices. A light and entertaining book with limited appeal but recommended for large public libraries.Christine Holmes, San Jose State Univ. Lib., CA
