Grades 5-7 This volume in the Makerspace Survival series combines makerspaces with information retention and critical-thinking skills to test readers' abilities to survive being stranded on a desert island. Introductory chapters explain the ecology, environment, and dangers of these islands and give an overview of ways that peopleinhabitants and castawayssurvive on them. The text provides the reader with an ax, a mirror, and a backpack filled with various items, and periodic Can You Make It? activities will require the use of these materials, although each can only be used once (activity solutions are given at the end). There's quite a lot of information here, and most pages are fairly text heavy, but island photographs and activity diagrams help break it up. Whether they survive their fictional ordeal or not, readers will certainly come away feeling prepared.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
