ebook

Plants can't run, but some of them can hide, thanks to camouflage, an important plant defense. Readers learn why some plants must hide in order to survive, which fits into a larger discussion of plant life cycles and behavior. This curriculum-driven text uses a high-interest lens to explain important science concepts, such as the role plants play in their ecosystem as well as how to identify them in nature. By the end of this title, young botanists will be encouraged to get out in nature and find plants that are hiding!

Gr 3-5-An eye-opening look at plants. Each book includes an explanation of the adaptations that resulted in the subjects' unusual features. Volumes about plants that eat, poke, and poison are particularly excellent for their well-chosen examples and solid use of text and photos throughout. For example, in Poke, the written explanations of structural differences among thorns, spine, and prickles are reinforced by labels on the accompanying photo. Poison provides the widest range of examples and stresses the importance of consulting a guide before handling unknown species. The titles on plants that hide, mimic, or move are more general and stress their survival techniques as much as defense.
