When you look at a plant, how can you tell if it's really the plant you think it is, or if it's just playing pretend? Some plants practice mimicry, which is a defense mechanism that keeps them from being disturbed, or worse, eaten by enemies. Readers learn about plants that have evolved to practice mimicry and how it's essential to their survival. Through colorful photographs of various plant species, as well as language that is designed to be fun yet informative, this title will turn any beginning science student into a budding botanist.

Gr 3-5-An eye-opening look at plants. Each book includes an explanation of the adaptations that resulted in the subjects' unusual features. Volumes about plants that eat, poke, and poison are particularly excellent for their well-chosen examples and solid use of text and photos throughout. For example, in Poke, the written explanations of structural differences among thorns, spine, and prickles are reinforced by labels on the accompanying photo. Poison provides the widest range of examples and stresses the importance of consulting a guide before handling unknown species. The titles on plants that hide, mimic, or move are more general and stress their survival techniques as much as defense.
