QUILTY Treasures

THE FESTIVAL OF QUILTS 2025 UK • The Festival of Quilts began in 2003, launched in partnership with The Quilters’ Guild with a simple but powerful idea: to create a place where people from around the world could come together to celebrate, share and be inspired by the art of patchwork and quilting. More than 20 years on, the festival has grown into the largest quilting show in Europe, welcoming more than 22,000 quilting enthusiasts each year. It is now firmly established as a must-visit event on the global quilting calendar, attracting visitors, makers and artists from across the UK and beyond. Ed note: Quilt sizes and artist statements were not available at time of printing.

Nature Inspired, Contemporary Designs with JENNY ROFE • Jenny is recognised for her contemporary, nature-influenced quilts and regular participation in major NSW quilt exhibitions. Her work often reflects her garden, local landscape and a strong sense of colour and composition.

Gum Blossoms • This small project shares two of the most prevalent components of Jenny’s textile projects: appliqué and embroidery. Jenny makes an overlay made from sheer Vilene or tracing paper that has the design traced onto it. This is then placed on top of the background fabric. An alternative is to use a light box. All the appliqué is needleturn, using a small slip stitch and a 4mm (3/16in) seam allowance.

BREAKFAST AT Grandma’s • Rosette blocks and scalloped borders come together sweetly in this gorgeous quilt, which features soft flowing colours. Low and medium volume prints combine with pink, blue and green fabrics.

Seven Treasures • This sashiko table setting draws on Jane’s long-standing study of Japanese textiles and handwork, with emphasis on authentic sashiko patterns, thread weights and cloth. This pattern features the traditional shippo Japanese motif, Japanese fabrics and sashiko threads.

Quilts tell the American story • As the United States of America this year commemorates 250 years since the Declaration of Independence, the role of commemorative quilts is in the spotlight. Quilt historian Sandra Sider’s book Commemorative American Quilts: Stitching Our Heritage from 1876 to Today, published this year by Schiffer Craft, explores how quilts tell “the complex story” of American history — from pride and celebration to controversy and pain. An exhibition inspired by the book is being held at the New England Quilt Museum in Massachusetts (US).

LOLLIPOP Shoppe • This fun fusible appliqué project first appeared in Homespun magazine in 2013 — it’s as cute now as it was then! Simply fuse the circles in place and machine raw-edge appliqué around them.

Art Quilt Australia 2025 • The biennial Art Quilt Australia competition brings together 22 outstanding works that reflect the depth, diversity and evolving ambition of contemporary textile art in Australia.

Thread Play CHOOSING THE RIGHT THREAD FOR TEXTURE AND DETAIL • In the world of quilting, we often spend months — sometimes years — agonising over fabric choices and pattern precision. But when it comes to the actual quilting process, many of us reach for the same reliable spool of ‘neutral’ thread without a second thought.
